Abstract
The Polish energy sector is shaped by a combination of regulations, especially those pertaining to environmen-tal protection, domestic and international energyresource availability,and pricing of both renewable and non-renewable resources,in addition tothe economics of energy exploration, transport, refining, production, dis-tribution,and final energy use. The article outlines the main global factors shapingthe use of energy sources inPoland and in the world,and proposes that strategic management of the Polish energy industry be based onminimizing the discounted unit social cost of final energy use as the criterion for optimizing decisions on choos-ing energy sources and conversion technologies.
